Knocking on Heaven’s Door – A Story of Peace and Healing – Deserves Special Mention (Archived)
Years ago, my late mother suffered a cardiac event and flatlined several times, once for two long minutes. Her skilled medical team revived her, but during the experience, she had a Near Death Experience (NDE) that left a lasting impact. She described being enveloped in a peaceful, beautiful fog, feeling the calmest she had ever been, but without a clear path forward. It wasn’t her time.
My mother, who struggled with mental health issues, feeling ultimate peace was profound. I initially thought she was meant to share her story, but instead, I became the one to share it. Over time, I came to understand that her extended life allowed me to face the deep trauma of growing up with a mother who had unresolved issues (narcissism). Though painful, that realization was my greatest gift.
A childhood friend shared my mother’s experience with her dad as he neared the end of his life, saying, “If Mrs. Gallaway said this, you know it’s true.” And so it became, “If Mrs. Gallaway said it, it’s true!” Over the years, I’ve shared this story, and it’s brought peace and understanding to those nearing transition and those grieving loved ones. The original image now hangs above my much-loved bath, where I reflect on the movement of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” while soaking in warmth.
I began my art journey in mid-March 2023.
MARSHLAND AND MOROCCAN DREAM are two of my “firsts.” They both hang our wall and remind me, especially on days I feel I’ve lost any skill gained, to keep the art journey going.
MARSH LAND 18″ x 24″ | NFS Many layers came first, before applying the final touch. I thought I had ruined it and became frustrated. My intention is to bring good energy to all my paintings, so I stepped away. The following morning, renewed I moved forward scraping back layers and Marshland emerged!

I about tossed this out the window. The border was challenging – blending color that complimented while not smudging when working the center (I smudged often) provided all kinds of learning opportunities. I added marble dust for texture in places. I also learned what I don’t enjoy doing.
For 59 years, my unconscious self waited for my conscious self to step aside and make space for my hidden artistic side. When it finally emerged, it burst forth like a tidal wave! I dove into art, learning, experimenting, and painting every day. Doors opened, art sold, a show was held, and a gallery came calling. The journey ahead is a mystery, and I’m embracing every exciting twist and turn
